One of the best ways to get started with creating art is to do some research. There are so many websites that you can go to and find lots of art to look at.

Start by just flipping through books and magazines and sites like this one: nationalgallery.org.uk When a piece of art catches your attention, take some time to really look at it. What is it about the piece that intrigues or interests you? Is it the color? The design? The mood of the piece? You may like it without even knowing why or how to express what it is that you like about it. Curiosity is an integral part of the creative process. Challenging yourself to learn new things will improve your art.

There should be some kind of idea behind your work, even if it's only to learn shading and/or perspective. Stay curious and maintain an inquiring mind. Don’t let perfectionism stop you. Don’t get too caught up in being original. So much has already been done or copied.

Study techniques. At times, the technique for making your art will become an obsession. That’s where the craft part of creating comes into play. After you have mastered your technique, you’ll likely want to explore new ways to use it.

All said, there is still no substitute for just doing the work. Ideally, you would carve out a daily schedule of creative time. Even a few times a week can be beneficial. Pick up a pencil and start making marks!
